"The writing of Empires was a three year journey that began with a research project on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and culminated with the completion of my first year of seminary. As I was studying the ebb and flow of American Christianity, reading up on the empires of the Ancient Near East, and watching the daily updates on the war in Iraq, I slowly began to put down on paper what would become the lyrics for the Empires album. Whether it was the fall of the neo-Babylonians, the devolution of the Roman Empire, or the unraveling of the Soviet forces at the hands of nomadic Afghans, I was constantly reminded of the ephemeral nature of empires and their machinations throughout history.

But the rising and falling of empires doesn't happen on just a large scale and on just the world stage... it happens in our everyday lives as well. The best laid plans of anxious mothers, shrewd hedge fund managers, brilliant scholars, and poor artists often go awry, as often as empires rise and fall. Day in and day out we build our own babel towers and our own kingdoms, oblivious to the fact that like grass, we wither. I hope this album will challenge the American church to consider where its allegiance lies and where its hope is found: do we yoke ourselves with a myth of national righteousness and the allure of the "American gospel" of holy prosperity, consumerism, and domination, or do we yoke ourselves with a lowly king born in a back alley stable, who was despised to death, and yet whose kingdom endures forever?" -Wen Reagan
