With the lyrical influences of Derek Webb and Andrew Peterson fused with the musical influences of Caedmon's Call, Wilco, and Steven Delopoulos (Burlap to Cashmere), Singer/Songwriter/Producer Wen Reagan provides a provocative inspection of kingdom building in his new concept album, Empires. Empires questions the disparity between the consumption-driven, prosperity-based empire building of American Christianity and the humiliating, self-sacrificing kingdom building of Jesus' biblical witness. Songs such as "The Christian Nation" and "The Empire Politik" question the myth of American national righteousness and the marriage between Christianity and American politics, while "The Empire of the Ministry Industry" and "The Kingdom Come" consider the state of the American church in regards to the consumption-driven market economy that surrounds and permeates it. Other songs, such as "The Kingdom of Broken Hearts & Kings" and "The Empire of the Heart" provide a more introspective look into the individual empires we all build on a daily basis; Empires that, in the end, will all turn to dust. At the heart of the album are the songs "Babylon" and "The Rising and Falling", two pieces that both proclaim the transience of the empires of the world while also proclaiming the eternity of the Kingdom of God. Throughout Empires, Wen weaves passionate story-telling and honest conviction with a rich diversity of sonic flair to both encourage and challenge the church to reconsider its history and place in the world as the body of Christ.

"The writing of Empires was a three year journey that began with a research project on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and culminated with the completion of my first year of seminary. As I was studying the ebb and flow of American Christianity, reading up on the empires of the Ancient Near East, and watching the daily updates on the war in Iraq, I slowly began to put down on paper what would become the lyrics for the Empires album. Whether it was the fall of the neo-Babylonians, the devolution of the Roman Empire, or the unraveling of the Soviet forces at the hands of nomadic Afghans, I was constantly reminded of the ephemeral nature of empires and their machinations throughout history.

But the rising and falling of empires doesn't happen on just a large scale and on just the world stage... it happens in our everyday lives as well. The best laid plans of anxious mothers, shrewd hedge fund managers, brilliant scholars, and poor artists often go awry, as often as empires rise and fall. Day in and day out we build our own babel towers and our own kingdoms, oblivious to the fact that like grass, we wither. I hope this album will challenge the American church to consider where its allegiance lies and where its hope is found: do we yoke ourselves with a myth of national righteousness and the allure of the "American gospel" of holy prosperity, consumerism, and domination, or do we yoke ourselves with a lowly king born in a back alley stable, who was despised to death, and yet whose kingdom endures forever?" -Wen Reagan

Review by Kristan for Wen Reagan : The Great Facade 2004-12-29
I'll spare you my intellectual and philosophical musings about the lyrics/music and just say this: This is my new favorite CD--I have listened to it at least 20 times since I got it. It is the best.

Review by Adam Snavely for Wen Reagan : The Great Facade 2004-11-01
We live in a moment in time when technology and science have threatened to become the prime means through which we understand ourselves and our relationship to the universe around us. Yet, contemplating our lives and the world around us through the lens of technology and science can become dangerous, ultimately distorting our true worth as creatures made in the image of God. I see this CD as a great musical text from which such meaningful themes emerge. This CD encourages the type of contemplation of a great literary novel. It’s music with meaning.

I had the opportunity to hear this a month ago. The lyrics are meaningful and moving but the music is innovative yet genuine. The classic chord progressions are punctuated with new rhythms. Outstanding!

Wen is a huge stud. The musical talent on this cd is amazing and when put together with Wen's powerful lyrics, it creates a dynamic CD. Check it out!

awesome music and bold lyrics grounded in a solid understanding of the Bible! Wow! What a great CD! The songs on this CD (unlike some Christian music) are filled with powerful and bold lyrics which are grounded in a solid understanding of Biblical theology. Wen isn't afraid to face the hypocrisy of this world head on. And on top of that, the music itself is awesome -- with every instrument and vocal part adding something new and also vital to the song. I can't wait to see them in concert!! (Could you guys tour in The Middle East too?!)

Review by Ryan Feaver for Wen Reagan : The Great Facade 2004-10-29
Five out of five! Great Album! Wen Reagan's album is awesome. He provides just the right blend of high-energy rock songs and softer tones with deep thoughts about our world over both. Also, one of the most musically diverse album's you'll find. Just listen to the album (and buy it); I would not be surprised at all to hear Conqueror or Idol on the radio anytime soon.

Review by Jonathan Wills for Wen Reagan : The Great Facade 2004-10-29
I am not typically a fan of Christian music. Most that I hear is very standard guitar, and not very intense lyrically. This CD, however, rocks my face off. Mandolin, violin, djembe, and serious lyrics. I would definitely say that this CD is one of the best that antyhing in the realm of contemporary Christian music has to offer.
