Well, I've known Siiri for a long time now - I can remember singing in the high school chorus with her. I've also spent several years rather deeply involved in the music industry in pretty much every capacity. In all that time and with all the "big name" artists that I have spent time with, I have only heard one other voice that strikes me as deeply as hers. This past weekend, I was exhibiting in the local Arts Day and found out that part of the festivities included Tree By Leaf performing (well, just Siiri and Garrett, the others were off having a baby - no, really...they were). I hadn't seen Siiri since leaving town for college (in '95) and was rather excited for the opportunity to see/hear her again. I must say, I was not dissappointed. I am Buddhist rather than Christian and (as Siiri can attest) am in fact rather anti-Christian (not the people, just the ideas), so the religious impact of the music was lost on me. However, this leaves me to judge the music solely on its own merit - and it performs admirably. Their emotions and their conviction is strongly carried throughout their music. It can be said that the things that are most complex are the things least tangible, and their music is no exception. While Garrett isn't exactly Les Paul or Jimi Hendrix in terms of his guitar skills, he is quite talented. The songs are written fairly simply with only basic harmonics in the vocals, but the energy and drive behind it is what makes it so powerful. Even if you were to ignore the actual lyrics and riffs to drift in the overall sounds, that feeling and conviction still drives through. Knowing Siiri as well as I do, and having (finally) met Garrett and talked with him, I can confidently say that this group has nowhere to go but up. -Bryan (ripple@acm.org) PS. I'm sure it's not permanent, but your website seems to be down at the moment, so if any of y'all in the band see this, drop me an email. I'm gonna be getting back in touch with some of my contacts in the MA/NY music scene to try to land you a few extra gigs....
Review by Rick Virgl for Tree By Leaf 2001-12-15
After Evening Treatise one was left with an overwhelming desire to hear more. Unlike most bands whose second effort is a disapointment. Tree by Leaf has truly out done themselves with Works of Mercy. Sweet harmonies and compelling lyrics did deep into your heart and mind as the notes pass gently by your ears. Tree by Leaf is without a doubt one of the best out there! Cliff, Kelly, Garrett, Siiri, Justin - Great Job!

I first heard Tree by Leaf when I was a fresheman in high school and several years later they are still a favorite. I have been fortunate to hear their ministry in serveral different settings, ranging from our Soul Cafe to the Sunrise Easter Service for Trinity United Methodist. I encourage anyone who has never heard this music to do so. I own both CDs, as well as Garrett and Siri's tape which proceeded the CDs. The music has a potentcy which speaks to the heart and leads directly to worship. God is truly the driving force of the music and the daily lives of the musicians. May God bless them and their work.

Review by Shawne Morrill Randlett for Tree By Leaf 2001-08-20
I stumbled upon Tree by Leaf at the Inside Out Soul Festival at Loon Mountain, August 2001. A friend and I stopped to hear what was playing at one of the smaller stages, and I was really taken with them after listening for a couple of songs. They have a unique sound and their harmonies are heavenly. I like their "plain speaking" way of poetry. They have the potential of attracting a diverse audience, which means the public will not tire of hearing them. I bought Evening Treatise that day and will go on to buy Works of Mercy. "14 Dilemmas" is a song that describes my own way of working through problems, and why DO all the pictures of Jesus in churches airbrush Him into impotence and cotton candy niceness?

tree by leaf is simply a great band. their songs, both lyrics and music, are insightful and profound. i have had the opportunity to meet the members of this band and to hear them perform live, and i have never met nicer people nor heard better music. the first album, evening treatise, was great, but works of mercy is even better.
