Ryan Vaughn pilots ten songs in this, his debut solo project, to communicate a pattern of sincere and cyclical hope and despair. Melodies display influences ranging from traditional folk tunes to modern alternative rock. And while each of the tracks may have at least one thing in common (each is easy to listen to), the musical terrain covered in the album creates an aesthetically pleasing array of textures for the listener to enjoy.

"We utilized all kinds of people for this project," Vaughn said when asked about the recording process. "It was a challenge to communicate what I wanted to hear from each musician, being that we all had such different musical backgrounds and tastes."

But Vaughn says that a veteran steel guitarist and a gospel choir will sound amazingly well together if given the chance to work out some of their differences. Vaughn recorded the tracks in College Station, Texas at a studio run cooperatively by Ross King and Keith Sewell and currently resides in his hometown, Austin, Texas, where he is finding his way amidst a vibrant and richly talented musical community.

Review by Billy Hollis for Ryan Vaughn : Turn Me Over 2005-05-26

Ryan Vaughn is an honest songwriter. It is refreshing to hear Christian music void of the cluttered phrases of typical Christian culture and thick with timeless truths. His songs deal with the human condition and is best conveyed through his own point of view. Turn Me Over is not a slick title slapped on to his record because it "sounded good." Turn Me Over is what he wants the listener to do. He turns himself over to share with the listener his own struggles, complications, and journeys through emotions defined, and at times, unknown, as the listener hears in, Sweet Complication: "It's okay to cry even if you don't remember why". Ryan's music communicates and connects with the listener because of the narrative nature of his songs. Story is the language the human heart speaks best. Turn Me Over is an honest "take it or leave it" audio journal that leaves the listener satisfied. One might find himself playing it over and over again to dig deeper and find something different that tells another chapter they may have missed the first time.

Vaughn's style blends contemporary folk reminiscent of Wilco, The Red House Painters, Guy Forsythe, and Bill Mallonee (Vigilantes of Love) with carefully crafted rhythms, steal guitar, crunching distortion at times, all of which support the lyrics and melody of the songs. The listener is never confused as to what he or she is supposed to pay attention to. The music doesn't distract from the lyrics. Hats off to this freshman project and may many more come down the line, and may Vaughn continue to be concerened with truth and honesty of music more than selling out to conceptual popularity.

Review by ryan g for Ryan Vaughn : Turn Me Over 2005-01-06
This is one of the most melodic and honest albums I have ever had. Ryan Vaughn is a creative treasure in the christian music scene, this won't be the last time you hear about him.
