Celtic Conversations Across Time

From the insert: What interests me most is not Celtic culture or "spirituality" but the Celts' embrace of Christ. Most historians place this in the 6th century, but the Galatians, to whom Paul wrote his letter were, in fact, Celts. We see something of their passion, for better or for worse in that letter.

When St. Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland he found men and women who eagerly embraced the gospel, with its emphasis on Jesus, "through whom God created all things." For it was through creation, the stars, the trees, even the stories, that these people had sought, in vain to find God. When they embraced Christ (or perhaps were embraced by Him!) it was with their characteristic passion.

The features that characterize Celtic Christianity are aspects to which many of us in the 21st century are drawn; a refusal to compartmentalize their faith, an emphasis on personal evangelism, a desire to communicate the Faith through as many means as possible, art, music, etc. These ancient melodies are a reflection of that desire. Indeed we do not even know how old they are. Most of the lyrics come to us from a later time, from the 8th through the 17th centuries mostly. And so these songs represent a worshipful conversation over time; melodies from the ancient Celts, words from a later period of revival, and now our own versions, hopefully full of the same passion for the same Lord who is ever ancient, ever new.

A friend lent me this CD and I was shocked to realize I had missed this "Gem for Jesus" I will be purchasing my own Starkindler CD and several more as well. Michael Card has touched my soul in a way that a lot of other Christian Artists just cannot.

Review by Cameron Beahan for Michael Card : Starkindler 2004-10-08
This CD re-introduced me to my Irish roots. It is the best mix of Traditional Irish music with Contemporary expression without destroying or watering down the Irish music. It remains my favorite CD.

Review by Lorraine Tsutsui for Michael Card : Soul Anchor 2004-06-11
I was looking for a slow waltz tune to dance with my son at his wedding. "Never will I leave you" seemed so appropriate. Michael Card is the greatest christian poet song writer!

Review by billy abungu for Michael Card 2004-06-03
I find the music of Michael Card both searing and heart-wrenching in such a positive way that very few christian artists are able to do for my listening. His ability to take a part of the scripture that you would read every day and just don't get the bells ringing and infuse it with the right instrumentation and a glorious interpretation with a contempory application is something of a remarkable fete. Above all his abilty to draw from the riches of the Old Testament, vividly make a connection with its interpretation in the New Testament and offer a pratical meaning to a contempory Christian is something that leaves me always marveling at how so current the word of God is to anyone looking for a solution to a modern problem.

We love this album! It was played during all three of our boys' births, and they listen to it every night as they drift off to sleep. Our oldest is now 8 years old and still prefers this CD over any other.
