The history of mercyme.

During 2001, MercyMe debuted their first release on INO Records, Almost There. Track 5 on that album, I Can Only Imagine delivered an unabashedly strong message about what heaven might be like. It quickly became apparent that it was a message the post-September 11 nation needed desperately to hear. The No. 1 song, which nabbed several Dove Awards including the prestigious Song of the Year, garnered heavy airplay at Christian radio as well as mainstream pop, country and adult contemporary stations nationwide. Millions of radio listeners who may not have ever considered themselves fans of Christian music suddenly found themselves singing along to the song’s irresistible chorus. The million-selling album Almost There on INO Records took its rightful place along mega- star pop acts on the Billboard Top 200 pop charts for months.

This laid-back worship band from Greenville, Texas, quickly evolved from being Christian music’s fastest-selling new act in 2001 to one of the most successful bands in all musical genres. Their initial debut, Almost There, was certified Gold in less than a year, becoming the best-selling debut project of 2001 in the Christian music industry. To top it all off, they’ve earned an American Music Award nomination (and then a win in 2004 for Favorite Contemporary Inspirational Artist), and multiple GMA Music Awards including Song of the Year, Pop Song of the Year, Group of the Year, Artist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year for MercyMe frontman and Imagine scribe Bart Millard.

“I couldn’t pick another song I’d rather have be with me the rest of my life because of what it meant to me,” Millard says, adding “Imagine will always be a part of us and we’ll play it every night.”

The Coming up to Breathe CD I must agree is another mega platium success. The group is truly blessed and it is reflected in their Music. Not only are they talented but each song seems to speaking to you. My favorite is bring on the rain. It is such a testmony of faith that I can truly relate to.

This is, without a doubt, the best MercyMe record thus far. The messages that this album puts out is astounding. If you're a MercyMe fan, this will sure make a very good album in your music collection. They are so talented and blessed. Go MercyMe!

Review by Carol Wint for MercyMe : Coming Up To Breathe 2006-04-22
I was fortunate enough to win a copy of the CD "Coming up to Breathe" from WCVK in Bowling Green, KY this week. I am here to tell you that this is an awesome CD!! Very blessed and very anointed. I hope to even get to use "Die for You" in my wedding in May. I have loved this band ever since I heard "I Can Only Imagine" years ago, just before my grandfather died. It helped me to be able to rejoice in his death because I could always remember that he was so much happier in Heaven than lying there in that nursing home. Thank you for following the Lord in your songs and ministry.

Review by Addie Vertin for MercyMe : Almost There 2004-10-16
The first time I had ever heard a song of MercyMe's was at the funeral of a girl that went to school with me. She was 13 years old, and her family attended a Baptist church, so when I went to the funeral, there was a lady there singing "I Can Only Imagine" I was like wow, I have to find out who sings this song, because as soon as I heard the first few lines, I was immediately hooked. I've always been pretty big on religion, but I never really listened to "gospel" music, now, I listen to it like every day. I found out from someone that I know that MercyMe was going to be in town as part of the Billy Graham concert thing, of course I got interested in MercyMe a little late to go to the concert, but I really wish I could have gone, I think it would have been an awesome experience, but for now, I guess just listening to their CD will have to be good enough. Hearing "There's a Reason" or "I Can Only Imagine" will make you want to praise God every minute of every day. And I think thats something that I need in my life, because with a physical disability, I have a lot of hard days and things like inspirational music helps me get through those days. People buying their music or tickets to see MercyMe will NOT be a waste of money!!!

Review by Ray Mann for MercyMe 2004-07-11
Well, about three months ago I was introduced to the sound of MercyMe, but it was done as a praise and worship at my church...we sang a song by them. Okay, I need to know more...so a friend loaned me the CD "Spoken For" and at first I really didn't give the music much thought, but one day I really listened to the messages from each song...and I had to have more so, I went out and bought all of thier music and I'm attending a concert at DTE Energy Theater, Tuesday, July 13. I got front row! MercyMe is a blessing to all of us youn and old.

Review by Nancy Dougherty for MercyMe : Undone 2004-07-01
I remember Bart, Mike and Jim from the early 90's when they were doing Youth Camps and going with our youth group on Michigan ski trips. They are the most awesome group of guys I know and I am thrilled to see their success. My husband and I used to send them money every month because we had never seen a group of young men bring so many teenagers to know Christ. I have the very first couple of CD's and a tape from the beginning of MercyMe and a t-shirt of Bart's grandmother. She is who named them... Cudos guys...you're awesome and I love ya! Nancy Dougherty

Review by Walter Watson for MercyMe : Undone 2004-05-28
This song is a wonderful modern day hymn. I am a pastor of a small church and it is a wonderful message to every one to hear. MercyMe is one of the finest groups I have ever heard and I will use any of their songs in our services. "I can only Imagine", is probably the most inspirational song of our decade. I love to listen to this song over and over.
